Slang is a language made up of words and phrases and used informally among social groups or in-groups. It is present in various countries and subcultures worldwide. Here are a few cool slang words and terms used in various countries that you just may want to be aware of when you travel or interact in certain circles.  1. Gen Z Slang Today, Gen Z seems to have developed their own English Language. This is due to much of the communication that occurs over the internet. They rely on memes and emojis which some say have diluted interactions. SKSKSKSK is a series of letters typed which means exclamation, showing excitement about something. It can be used in the same context as OMG. If you were born in the 80s, you might be familiar with the phrase “chill out” to mean relaxing and enjoying the atmosphere. The youth now use the word “vibing” instead. If you are referred to as G.O.A.T, don’t be offended as it is a complement which means “the greatest of all time.” Being “salty” has nothing to do with taste; instead, it means someone is jealous.  2. Aussie Slang Australian slang is called Stine. For instance, to “give someone a bell” should not be taken literally as it means to call someone on the phone. When some says “hot under the collar” don’t think of temperature and get them a cold glass of water because that wouldn’t be accepted. It means to get angry. If someone says they like your “thongs,” ladies don’t feel offended. Thongs are used to refer to flip flops.  3. Medical Slang Used by doctors, nurses, paramedics and other health care providers, medical slang is the use of invented acronyms that sound impressive and are usually flippant, to describe a patient or health personnel. It is a code between medical personnel. These are often used in Britain. “Shotgunning” means that the doctor has no idea what’s wrong with the patient and has ordered a variety of tests in the hope that one of them will help with the patient’s diagnosis. If the ER doctor says “UBI”, this means an unexplained beer injury. “Bury the hatchet” is not a phrase you would want to hear a surgeon use because it means that a surgical instrument was accidentally left inside the patient. OOOPS!!!  4. Appalachian Slang Appalachian English is an American English native dialect. It is also called Smoky Mountain English and is an English variety of southern Appalachia. This language is still spoken by some people today and has caught the attention of linguists. “Firefox” refers to something that glows in the dark. If you call for a “granny woman” then a midwife will come your way. The difference between “long sweetening” and “short sweetening” is that the former is maple syrup and the latter, sugar or honey. This is important when at the breakfast table.     5. Polari Slang Polari, from Italian “parlare,” means “to talk.” It is a slang made of words from various sources used by actors, circus showmen, criminals, prostitutes and gay subculture that at one time were seen as powerless in Britain. It is a mixture of rhyming slang, back slang, Italian, French and Cant. “Naff ” means tasteless and awful. “Scarper '' means to run off which is from the Italian word “Scappare” meaning to escape. There are words for some body parts such as ends- hair; esong- nose; ogles- eyes; screech- mouth; palliasse- back.
