We all know that meat is a great source of protein but so are insects. In many countries, there’s nothing weird or strange about munching on six-legged critters—if anything they are considered to be mouth-watering treats that can be prepared in all sorts of ways. Harvesting these insects can bring in some real money and it’s an actual industry in certain parts of the world, much like the meat industry. By the way, if you have a weak stomach, this list may not be for you. Here are some of the most insane insect delicacies from around the world. 1. Korea: Silkworm Pupae In case you didn’t know, silkworms are the reason why we have soft and luxurious fabrics. But their benefits go way beyond just textiles—these worms also serve as the main ingredient in a Korean street food known as beondegi, one that goes well with a glass of white wine. Beondegi is a big deal over there and most street vendors often cook the silkworms right there by boiling, seasoning and stewing them in a brothing liquid. It’s usually served in a cup and can even be purchased online and shipped right to your doorstep. 2. Indonesia: Dragonflies Dragonflies do more than just help to keep mosquitoes at bay, they also serve as a delicious food source for the people of Indonesia. First, the insects are caught by dipping a stick into tree sap then laying it out for the dragonflies to land on. Once they’re caught, the wings are removed and then they’re either boiled alive or fried to be served as a dessert. It is said that its flavor is comparable to that of crab. The same can be said of its nutritional value. 3. Thailand: Crickets One of Thailand’s most popular and accessible snacks is the Jing Leed which is basically fried crickets. It’s usually served by street vendors who prepare it by toasting them first in a wok for a few minutes then seasoning them with Golden Mountain sauce (a type of soy sauce) and finally some Thai pepper powder. The taste is said to be comparable to popcorn and locals swear it goes best when paired with a beer. Don’t be so quick to write off fried crickets, though. It’s filled with lots of minerals such as calcium, copper and zinc, similar to beef. 4. Mexico: Stinkbugs The indigenous people have been munching on these creepy crawlies for a very long time, a practice which continues to this day. One insect commonly found on the menu is the stinkbug which even has its own festival known as the Jumil Festival which honors the insect's supposed health and medicinal benefits. They are often served live and accompanied with a dipping sauce. Some people prefer to toast them inside tortillas or make them into guacamole sides. The stinkbug is said to have a spicy flavor despite its putrid smell. 5. Japan: Wasps In Japan, there’s an entire festival known as the Kushihara Wasp Festival that is dedicated solely to wasps and the many ways they can be eaten. There, you can learn all you need to know about how wasps can be prepared and the various sauces and flavors it can be turned into. Sometimes the wasps are marinated in ginger and used to top sushi and even rice cookies. One of the more common treats is the wasp cracker which at first glance appears similar to American cookies but with bitter ground wasps that are supposed to resemble raisins.
