1. The Galactic Republic and Rome
Both the Galactic Republic of Star Wars and Ancient Rome were Republics, and both societies had a strong belief that the Republic would last forever. The Republic's determination to conquer and advance led to a succession of battles in both civilizations. The Star Wars prequel trilogy is based on the fall of Rome. The prosperous Galactic Republic gradually loses control of its democracy and is taken over by a despot who proclaims the Galactic Empire's rule. This was done based on the collapse of the Roman Republic and the subsequent rise of an empire.
2. Stormtroopers and German Soldiers
In Star wars, the Stormtoopers were the empire’s armed forces. The German "shock" soldiers who served in the First World War inspired the name of these units. They are known for their well designed armor. The attire worn by Imperial officers on board Star Destroyers in charge of the Stormtroopers was modeled after that of senior German military officers used during World War II. The silver Totenkopf on their caps shows just how much the black uniforms resemble S.S. outfits.
3. The Imperial Guards and The Guards at Buckingham Palace
The similarity between the Imperial Guards and the Buckingham Palace guards is undeniable thanks to the bright red outfit, silent stance, single distinctive weapon and the headgear. The Emperor’s Royal guards serve the same purpose of the British guards which is to protect a sovereign. They are both unsurpassed in skill and status. The only difference is that while Buckingham guards have a resistance and tolerance for dealing with tourists, the same can’t be said for those guards featured in Star Wars.
4. The Jedi Council and The Knights Templar
The Knights Templar had an impact on the highest-ranking Jedi Knights who sat on the Jedi Council. Because they were more powerful, devoted, and morally upright than other knights, the Templars were respected more highly. The Templars, like the Jedi, were led by a grand master who served as the center of a twelve member council of elders. Generally speaking, the Jedi were modeled after Shaolin monks and Japanese samurai soldiers, but the politics of the Jedi were borrowed from the Knights Templar. The Templars were destroyed by France's King Philip IV, much like Palpatine did with Order 66.
5. The Rebels’ Battle against the Empire and the Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was drawing to an end at the time George Lucas was writing Star Wars. In America, there had been intense discussion about the conflict, with many opposing the U.S. government's decision to participate in it at all. It's interesting how the Empire, with its military-industrial complex and considerably more sophisticated technology, reflects America's involvement in the battle, while the Rebels, with their valiant opposition against invading forces, parallel the Viet Cong. It's no secret that George Lucas wasn't the biggest supporter of President Nixon, so it's no surprise that he painted Americans as villains in his covert protest against the Vietnam War.
